Job Summary

Safety and Support Services Officer – The Safety Department maintains a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors at the Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan. The officer responds to crisis situations (physical or verbal assaults, suicidal behavior), assists nursing and clinical staff, and conducts environmental safety checks and transports to treatment programs and meals.

3520 W Oxford Avenue, Denver, CO 80236 – Full‑time & part‑time, on‑site, shift work.

Job Responsibilities

• Respond to hospital staff requests for assistance.
• Perform supportive actions and approved physical intervention techniques as needed.
• Maintain safety and security throughout the hospital by responding to psychiatric emergencies and non‑emergency situations.
• Exercise sound judgment and emotional control while evaluating risk, and participate in incident defusing and debriefing.
• Use effective communication skills, Verbal Defense Interventions (VDI) and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) skills with patients and staff.
• Support patient transport needs when appropriate.
• Provide security by patrol, observation, and rounding to detect, prevent, and control security incidents.
• Document reports of criminal activity and provide traffic surveillance and parking control.
• Perform monthly safety inspections of clinical units and fire drills.
• Transport or escort clients and staff to and from various locations on and off hospital grounds.
• Communicate with police agencies and act as liaison between Fort Logan and local law enforcement.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least one year of professional experience in an occupational field related to the assigned work.
• Physically able to be on their feet for the entire shift and climb stairs; willing and able to intervene with assaultive patients.
• Valid, unrestricted Colorado driver’s license.
• Age 21 or older with no felony convictions or history of domestic violence.

Preferred Qualifications

• College education in a behavioral health and/or justice‑related field.
• Experience working with adjudicated or detained mental health populations within a secure residential or behavioral health setting.
• Experience facilitating psycho educational groups and working with adolescents who have trauma.
• Experience in mentoring or coaching mental health populations.
• Experience with verbal de‑escalation and motivational techniques.
• Relevant years of state service experience.

Work Environment

Shift work—including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift lengths vary from 8 to 12 hours. Mandatory overtime may be required. Day shift work is typically not available. The position is considered essential and may require reporting to work during inclement weather.

Conditions of Employment

• Full background screening including name check, fingerprint check, court database look‑up, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, license verification, drug screen, and other relevant databases.
• Completion of required training and licensing (e.g., DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program, annual training).
• Travel for transportation of youth in state vehicles to training and alternate sites.
• Completion of a sexual risk screening tool (Diana Screen).
• Disclosure of any prior disciplinary termination or resignation if applicable.
