Director of Technology and Security Initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (in Political Science or Computer Science a plus)
  • Five or more years of experience in public administration, public policy, information technology (IT), or security roles (some leadership preferred)
  • Knowledge of IT and security issues affecting NASS member offices
  • Understanding of emerging technologies and trends, including generative Artificial Intelligence
  • Experience working with an association or any level of government is preferred
  • Experience working with high-level government officials
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate divergent stakeholders into collaborative coordination
  • Experience in a dynamic work environment
  • Robust relationship-building skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical or executive audiences
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to “hit the ground running” and learn office processes quickly and effectively
  • Industrious self-starter who works well independently and with a small team
  • Desire to work in a non-partisan organization serving bipartisan membership

Role Includes:

Lead NASS Technology & Security Initiatives

  • Work with NASS Executive Director and leaders to determine priorities related to IT, cybersecurity, physical security, emergency preparedness and response, and related topics
  • Work with NASS Chief Operating Officer to maintain NASS website content related to technology and security initiatives
  • Draft issue papers and other NASS materials on relevant technology and security topics
  • Staff NASS Technology and Security Committee
  • Work with co-chairs to establish priorities, schedule speakers, etc.
  • Track innovative technology and security state practices and facilitate sharing ideas across NASS member states.
  • Email members and relevant staff with updates as needed
  • Plan and execute workshops and closed sessions related to technology and security at NASS conferences as well as webinars as needed
  • Plan and execute ad hoc events related to technology and security such as tabletop exercises, Hacking Demystified, etc.
  • Assist NASS Communications staff with member talking points and responses to media inquiries related to election security and other relevant topics

Lead NASS Tech Talk Group for IT Leaders in Secretary of State Offices

  • Organize and lead monthly virtual Tech Talks
  • Organize and lead Tech Talk sessions at each NASS conference
  • Plan and execute annual in-person Tech Talk
  • Manage NASS Tech Talk online community forum
  • Work with IT lead for NASS President and other Tech Talk leaders to set priorities for the group

Federal and Stakeholder Affairs

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with:
  • IT and security leaders in member offices, federal agencies, and other organizations.
  • Third-party groups focused on relevant technology and security issues
  • Work with NASS Executive Director, NASS Senior Advisor, and NASS Director of Research and Public Affairs to track federal legislation, regulations, agency activities, etc. related to technology and security issues that affect NASS member offices
  • Track relevant activities of third-party groups and events.
  • Represent NASS at events related to relevant technology and security issues and present or speak on panels as needed
  • Work with NASS Chief Operating Officer to recruit NASS Corporate Affiliates and event sponsors in technology and security areas
  • Keep NASS Corporate Affiliates updated on relevant technology and security issues through monthly meetings, email updates, NASS events, etc.

Member Office Assistance

  • Act as subject matter expert on technology and security issues for NASS member offices
  • Help member offices connect with each other on shared issues
  • Connect member offices with relevant federal agencies, private-sector companies, and other organizations to address technology and security needs and concerns
  • Coordinate between NASS member offices and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) on security clearances and classified briefings, as applicable

NASS Internal Technology and Security Assistance

  • Work with NASS Executive Director and NASS Chief Operating Officer to make organizational decisions related to IT and security
  • Coordinate with managed service providers, technology providers, and security support organizations on behalf of NASS

This position is hybrid – working from home and the NASS DC office with about 1-3 weeks of travel per year. Fully remote applicants may be considered. The Association provides generous benefits, and the starting salary range is $90,000-$110,000.
