Compensation: $160,000 – $240,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Security Clearance: Active Secret clearance or higher is required.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) to support the security, compliance, and accreditation of information systems in a federal or government-contractor environment. The ISSO will work closely with system owners, engineers, and cybersecurity teams to ensure systems comply with federal security requirements, maintain Authority to Operate (ATO), and protect organizational assets from cyber threats.

This role is ideal for professionals with strong experience in cybersecurity governance, Risk Management Framework (RMF), vulnerability management, and federal compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) for assigned information systems.
  • Ensure compliance with NIST, RMF, FISMA, DoD, and organizational cybersecurity requirements.
  • Support the Authorization to Operate (ATO) lifecycle, including system assessments, documentation, and continuous monitoring activities.
  • Develop, maintain, and update System Security Plans (SSPs), POA&Ms, Security Assessment Reports (SARs), and other RMF documentation.
  • Conduct security control assessments, risk analyses, and vulnerability management activities.
  • Coordinate vulnerability remediation efforts with system administrators, engineers, and application owners.
  • Review system changes and assess their impact on security posture.
  • Monitor security compliance using tools such as ACAS, Tenable, Splunk, Microsoft Defender, or similar technologies.
  • Participate in security audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
  • Support incident response activities and assist with cybersecurity investigations when required.
  • Provide security guidance to project teams throughout the system development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Stay current on evolving cybersecurity threats, federal regulations, and security best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Secret security clearance or higher (required).
  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Strong knowledge of the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) and NIST SP 800-53 security controls.
  • Experience supporting ATO packages and security compliance documentation.
  • Familiarity with FISMA, DoD STIGs, Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), and vulnerability management processes.
  • Experience with security tools such as Tenable/ACAS, Splunk, Microsoft Defender, or equivalent.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while supporting multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting DoD, federal civilian agencies, or government contractors.
  • Knowledge of FedRAMP and cloud security principles.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS GovCloud or Microsoft Azure Government environments.
  • Security certifications such as:
  • CISSP
  • CAP
  • Security+
  • CASP+
  • CISM
  • GSLC or equivalent DoD 8570/8140 certification

Experience Levels

ISSO I (3–5 Years)

  • 3–5 years of experience in information assurance or cybersecurity.
  • Experience supporting RMF documentation, vulnerability management, and compliance activities.
  • Familiarity with security assessments and federal security requirements.

Senior ISSO (8–10 Years)

  • 8–10 years of cybersecurity or information assurance experience.
  • Extensive experience managing ATO packages and implementing RMF across multiple systems.
  • Ability to lead security compliance efforts and advise technical teams on security requirements.
  • Experience mentoring junior ISSOs or cybersecurity analysts.

Principal ISSO (12–15 Years)

  • 12–15 years of progressive experience in cybersecurity, information assurance, or information system security.
  • Proven expertise leading enterprise security programs, accreditation efforts, and compliance initiatives.
  • Experience developing cybersecurity strategies, managing complex federal security environments, and advising executive leadership on risk management.
  • Demonstrated leadership in large-scale government or defense programs.
