Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s
Track Maintenance and Repair
- Perform routine inspection and maintenance of railway tracks, focusing on the condition of steel and wooden sleepers and their interactions.
- Replace and repair damaged sleepers, fasteners, and track components, ensuring they meet safety and operational standards
- Conduct alignment, levelling, and tamping operations to maintain proper track geometry, especially under heavy iron ore loads 1.4. Inspect and maintain ballast to ensure adequate drainage, stability, and load distribution.
KPI: Track Maintenance Efficiency: Percentage of scheduled maintenance tasks completed on time. KPI: Defect Resolution Time: Average time taken to identify and resolve track defects
Inspection and Safety Compliance
- Regularly monitor the structural integrity of tracks, sleepers, and joints to identify potential risks, such as sleeper decay or rail cracks.
- Ensure the railway adheres to safety standards by reporting hazards, conducting preventative maintenance, and resolving defects promptly
- Implement safety measures when working near active railway lines, including setting up proper signaling and wearing PPE.
KPI: Safety Compliance: Zero safety incidents or violations during maintenance and inspection activities. KPI: Track Geometry Adherence: Accuracy in maintaining gauge, alignment, and elevation standards.
Equipment Handling and Support
- Operate and maintain tools and machinery, such as hydraulic jacks, tamping machines, grinders, and rail saws, required for track repairs.
- Assist in the handling and transport of replacement materials, such as rails, sleepers, and ballast, to work sites.
- Support specialized teams during major maintenance projects, such as track realignment or sleeper replacement.
KPI: Response Time to Emergencies – Average response time to resolve critical track issues or defects KPI: Equipment Utilization – Proper and efficient use of tools and machinery, with minimal downtime or misuse.
Reporting and Documentation
- Accurately document inspection findings, maintenance activities, and repairs performed.
- Submit reports on material usage, safety compliance, and track conditions to the Track Maintenance Supervisor.
KPI: Documentation Accuracy – Completeness and accuracy of maintenance logs and inspection reports.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Task: Stay updated on the latest developments in track improvements/technologies and be able to use new tools or techniques to enhance track inspection and maintenance processes.
- KPI: Successfully implement at least one new inspection technology or methodology annually to improve track geometry monitoring.
Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Certification in railway maintenance or trackwork is an advantage.
- Experience:
- At least 1-2 years of experience in railway maintenance or a similar heavy industry role.
- Experience working on heavy-haul railways or lines with mixed sleeper types is highly preferred.
- Proven ability to use track maintenance tools.

1.9.3. Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities as required by company policy and regulations.

About The Team
ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) is operating inside Liberia since 2006, where we are employing approximately 1600 employees and about 1000 contractors mainly in the area of security as well as in transactional manual work like Bush cutting keeping the railway and our concession area free of natural overgrowth, as well as putting tarpaulins on the railcars etc.
In Liberia we are running operations, spread over three locations, our harbour, and our Main offices in Buchanan, and the Nimba region the mines, existing of multiple mining locations at Tokadeh, Gangar and Yuelliton and a Crushing plant and rail loading facility, serviced by our own accommodation settlement in Yekepa.
These locations are all connected with a 260 km Railroad, operated, and managed by AML, as per the MDA between ArcelorMittal and the government of Liberia.
Currently 5 mtpa iron ore (DSO -Direct Shipping Ore) are produced, which will be phased out in the next few years and replaced with Iron Ore Concentrate. The Phase 2 project aims to increase export of Iron Ore to 15 mtpa (concentrate). This was restarted end 2020 after it was put on hold in 2014 due to Ebola outbreak in. Significant civil construction work was already well advanced when the project was put on hold. Phase 2 of the project consist of an iron ore concentrator at the mine, rehabilitation and upgrade of Rail line, and a new iron ore bulk handling terminal in the port.
