Job Description

The Security Officer provides a safe environment for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers, typically in an office or ambulatory clinic setting. This position is responsible for monitoring visitor or patient activity, monitoring the premises in and around the facility, enforcing policy, providing assistance and direction, responding to emergencies, and protecting employees, visitors, and Intermountain property.

Essential Functions

  • Operates and monitors security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems. Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of security equipment.
  • De‑escalation:
    Use verbal and non‑verbal strategies to calm individuals and resolve conflicts peacefully, minimizing physical force.
  • Dealing with violent patients:
    Intervene to protect safety when patients act aggressively or violently, including using physical restraints when necessary.
  • Regulatory compliance:
    Ensure compliance with regulations such as HIPAA when reporting crimes or incidents, disclosing only the minimum necessary information to law enforcement.
  • Bomb threat/suspicious package responses:
    Respond to bomb threats and suspicious packages, following protocols to ensure the safety of the facility.
  • Participation in drills:
    Engage in exercises like infant abduction and active shooter scenarios to prepare staff for real‑life situations.
  • Conducting searches:
    Perform respectful and safe searches of patients and search for narcotics, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Safety inspections:
    Conduct inspections of walking surfaces, fire extinguishers, and overall facility safety to mitigate risks.
  • Parking enforcement:
    Enforce parking regulations to ensure safety and accessibility, focusing on enhancing the patient experience.
  • Investigations:
    Collaborate with HR and law enforcement to conduct investigations, following protocols for disclosing patient information and ensuring facility safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current driver’s license (if applicable for the role).
  • Current basic life support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • At least 21 years of age.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of previous law enforcement, corrections, public safety, military police, or security experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need to see, read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and assess customer needs.
  • Frequent interactions with customers require effective verbal communication and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transport, pull, and push equipment; work on hands and knees and bend to set up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Items of varying weights, up to heavy items.
  • When driving:
    Expected to operate a vehicle, requiring sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
